Wow! Lusia Harris made history in 1992 when she became the first Black woman to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. It’s an incredible accomplishment that won’t soon be forgotten.
Lusia Harris: The first woman to ever play in the NBA was Lusia Harris, who played for the New Orleans Jazz in 1979. She was a member of the Women’s Professional Basketball League and was signed by the Jazz as an exhibition player.
Nancy Lieberman: Nancy Lieberman became the first woman to play in a regular season NBA game when she signed with the Detroit Pistons in 1986. She also became the first female head coach of an NBA team when she coached for the Texas Legends in 2009.
Cheryl Miller: Cheryl Miller is one of only two women to have ever been drafted into an NBA team, being selected by Indiana Pacers in 1987. She never actually played for them, but went on to become a successful basketball coach and broadcaster.
Becky Hammon: In 2014, Becky Hammon became the first full-time female assistant coach in any major professional sport when she joined Gregg Popovich’s staff with San Antonio Spurs. She also made history as being one of only two women to ever serve as head coaches during summer league games, leading her team to victory twice during her tenure with Spurs.
