Wow, talk about a shocker! Who would’ve thought that sturgeon could be so aggressive? It’s true - these fish have been known to attack people! From snatching swimmers off the surface of the water to leaping out of the water and striking boats, sturgeon can be quite dangerous. Thankfully, these incidents are rare - but it’s still important to know what to do if you ever find yourself in this situation. So let’s take a closer look at why sturgeon attack people and how you can stay safe.
Have Sturgeon Ever Attacked People? [Solved]
Wow, that’s crazy! In June 2012, a huge sturgeon caused a woman to take a tumble out of her 17-foot boat on the Suwannee River. Unfortunately, she suffered multiple injuries. Then in 2015, five more direct strikes with leaping sturgeons on both the Suwannee and Sante Fe Rivers resulted in at least 8 injuries and even one death. Scary stuff!
Unprovoked Attacks: Sturgeon have been known to attack people without provocation, often resulting in serious injury or death.
Aggressive Behavior: Sturgeon can display aggressive behavior when they feel threatened, such as lunging at people or boats and attempting to bite them.
Habitat Loss: The loss of habitat due to human activities has caused sturgeon populations to decline, leading to increased aggression towards humans in some areas.
Prey Availability: Low prey availability can also lead sturgeon to become more aggressive towards humans as they search for food sources.
Migration Patterns: Changes in migration patterns due to climate change and other factors can cause sturgeon populations to move into areas where they are more likely to come into contact with humans, increasing the risk of attacks.
Wow, sturgeon attacking people? That’s crazy! Apparently, these fish can get pretty aggressive and have been known to lash out at unsuspecting swimmers. It’s definitely something to watch out for if you’re near the water. Yikes!
