Ball Release: The ball must be released from the player’s hand in order for a shot to be considered a missed shot.
Rim Contact: If the ball makes contact with the rim, it is not considered a missed shot, even if it does not go in the basket.
Backboard Contact: If the ball makes contact with the backboard, it is not considered a missed shot, even if it does not go in the basket.
Shot Clock Violation: If a player takes too long to shoot and violates the 24-second shot clock, then their attempt is considered a missed shot regardless of whether or not they make contact with either rim or backboard.
Rebounding Opportunity: A missed shot creates an opportunity for another player on either team to rebound and potentially score off of that rebound attempt.
